Subject: Trichomoniasis Testing Options for Male Patients
Thank you for reaching out with your question about trichomoniasis testing for male patients.
Yes—urethral swab collection is considered a valid specimen type for detecting Trichomonas vaginalis in males. However, our trichomoniasis test uses a urine specimen instead. Urine testing in males has been shown to have comparable sensitivity to urethral swab testing, while being significantly easier and more comfortable for patients to collect.
Because urine collection is non-invasive and can be completed quickly without specialized collection techniques, it helps reduce discomfort, improves compliance, and still provides reliable results. For these reasons, urine is the preferred specimen type for male trichomoniasis testing in our at-home testing program.
